NSM Jukebox technical tips
Last update April 22, 2025

I keep seeing people with keyboard problems on their NSM jukeboxes and it was time to make a page to cover this (and other) issues that are easily taken care of by folks with very basic tools!

ES-II/ ES-2 - Not programming

To start with if you have this type of "Phone-Pad" keyboard then what follow may help! You have one or more buttons that don't work? Perhaps #1 and #2 or other most often used keys?

NSM Keypad

Typically the problem is caused by wear of the nubbins that close the spring switch in your keypad - so remove the keypad from the jukebox and set it face down on your work space and then unscrew the back after first writing down the key numbers on the backside! Hold the back on while you remove the last screws otherwise it may spring apart a bit and you then have to hunt around for springs and/or screws...

Take aprt keypad - rear back off keypad

Remove the back and check out the keys that aren't working. Do they look like #1 and #4 here?

The easy fix? Lift out the button with the worn nub, separate the button cover from the body and rotate the number 180 degrees, reassemble the button and then simply install it rotated 180 degrees so the unused nub is now going to replace the worn out one!

Rotated button #1

Put springs back, and replace the back and put it back in the jukebox.

Job done!

If the nubbins are worn out on the other side because someone did this in the past then you have to replace the nubbin with a bit of nylon rod that is the correct diameter to fit in the hole. Click here for the link to the Keyboard 'nubbins'

NSM ES-2 Not programming? Norman MacRae (jukebox mail list - send email to subscribe) said this:
Although the jukebox ( City ES2) was on free play, the coin mech. was still connected and an issue had developed in it.

I have had a problem in the past with a fault on the remote selection card which took me ages to find - just because I kept looking in the wrong places, so I usually now disconnect that at the CCU if it's not used. All these inputs tie into the same switch matrix so a fault on something that's not used can easily screw things up.

One thing to be aware of is that there's an interposing circuit board between the coin mech and the CCU and disconnecting the coin acceptor plug at the CCU generates an error. The coin mech itself can be disconnected but the little circuit board which sits below it and behind the coin channel must remain connected to the CCU.

So now I can program the EA ROM (ER-1400, IC-12) using the guide although for a free play machine, really only two locations are required since most of the programming deals with pricing. And at the end of all that, there was nothing wrong with the original EA ROM!

Looking for more NSM tips? - Send me a note (email link below) and I'll see what I can do in my limited spare time!

Jukebox World has a great page on Frequently Asked Questions about NSM mechanisms it is in German so fire up your browsers Translate function to read it!
