Note that these substitutes are reversed pinout to the original part, you mount them with the plastic body facing the heat sink, four or five tiny washers will space it nicely to fit.
An easy way to tell if yours is bad is to check the voltage at the A (B) BIas. It should be around 10 to 11.5VDC. If higher (closer to 20VDC) then it is likely this trnasistor is bad.
